Chinese State Media Again Criticizes Takamichi’s Taiwan-related Remarks: Laying the Groundwork for Japanese Military Intervention in the Taiwan Strait

The official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, People's Daily, published an article criticizing Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's statement that the “status of Taiwan remains undetermined,” stating that her repeated mistakes on the Taiwan issue once again expose her true intention of breaking the post-WWII international order and paving the way for Japanese military intervention in the Taiwan Strait.

On Monday (December 1), People’s Daily published an article on page three with the byline “Zhong Sheng” titled "Japan’s So-called ‘Taiwan Status Undetermined’ Theory is Ignorance of History and a Misjudgment of Reality." The article stated that Takaichi has repeatedly erred on the Taiwan issue, exposing her deeply entrenched historical revisionist tendencies and reflecting her misjudgment of the current international political reality.

Recently, Sanae Takaichi cited the San Francisco Peace Treaty, claiming Japan does not have a stance on the legal status of Taiwan. The article states: “This deliberately distorted historical so-called ‘undetermined status of Taiwan’ argument is no different from her previous public claim that a ‘Taiwan contingency’ could constitute a ‘situation threatening Japan’s existence’. Once again, this exposes her true intention of breaking the post-war international order and laying the groundwork for Japanese military intervention in the Taiwan Strait.”

The article reiterates that the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation constitute a complete legal basis for China’s recovery of Taiwan, and once again affirms the official Chinese stance, defining the “San Francisco Treaty” cited by Takaichi as illegal and invalid. It states that she deliberately ignores a series of legal documents that form the cornerstone of the post-war international order and exclusively cites this illegal and invalid document, which is not only ignorance and distortion of history, but also a trampling on the internationally recognized norms.

The article sharply asks: “Sanae Takaichi declares ‘Japan is back,’ which prompts the question: What kind of Japan is back?!” It continues, saying if this remark means the resurgence or even the rampant rise of Japanese militarism, then the international community needs to be on high alert.
The article reviews Japanese militarism’s “colonial rule” over Taiwan, listing atrocities such as the Yunlin Massacre, Taoyuan Sanjiaoyong Massacre, and Xiaolong Massacre, calling them “inhumane crimes,” and bluntly states, “these deeds are not so far in the past.” Today, as Japanese right-wing politicians advocate that “a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency” and covet Taiwan once again, it is likened to salting historical wounds.

The article concludes explicitly that “the Taiwan issue is the core of China’s core interests,” and once again warns that “certain Japanese politicians” who play with fire on the Taiwan issue will get burned. It says that, having a grave historical responsibility on the Taiwan issue, Japan should be prudent in its words and deeds, deeply reflect on history, and cease any provocative actions on the Taiwan issue to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
