(Caracas, Venezuela, 12th) — Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said on Saturday (July 11) that the death toll from the massive earthquake on June 24 has risen to 4,333.
According to Bloomberg, Rodríguez stated that the number of injured stands at 16,740, and more than 6,400 people have been rescued from the rubble.
The latest fatality figure announced by Rodríguez is higher than the 4,118 deaths reported on Friday (the 10th). Search and rescue efforts have gradually shifted towards post-disaster reconstruction work.
On June 24, Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes within just one minute, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, affecting at least seven states nationwide. The most badly hit areas are La Guaira and Greater Caracas.
This earthquake has exacerbated longstanding severe pressure on Venezuelan hospitals and public services.
Venezuelan President Rodríguez called for the unfreezing of Venezuela’s frozen assets to fund earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts. She stated that the frozen resources, including gold held in the Bank of England and funds blocked due to sanctions, should be used to aid disaster victims, rebuild homes, and restore essential services.
