From Staring at the Floor to Enjoying the Stage: Zhang Bichen Confirms Her Musical Direction

China's OST Queen Zhang Bichen, who is set to perform in Malaysia on September 12th and 13th, looked back on her 10-year music journey—from keeping her head down on stage to confidently navigating the spotlight. She admitted to experiencing confusion and struggle, but has finally found her true musical path.
China’s OST Queen Zhang Bichen is marking her 10th debut anniversary with her very first solo concert in Malaysia. She will be performing the “Epic of Love” Symphonic Limited Concert on September 12th and 13th at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, blending pop and classical music in a spectacular audio-visual feast to thank her fans for years of support.
A reporter was recently invited by event organizer Star Fortress to Hong Kong for an exclusive on-site coverage of the “Epic of Love 2025 Symphonic Limited Concert” Hong Kong stop, and interviewed Zhang Bichen after the show, getting an up-close look at her deep thoughts on music and life. Reflecting on her 10-year career, Zhang shared in the interview: “When I first debuted, I wouldn't move on stage, I just dared to look down at the floor. Later, I mustered the courage to look up at the teleprompter, and now I can walk around and interact with the audience on stage. It's been a gradual process of building confidence, step by step.”

She confessed to going through a period of being lost in her musical direction, unsure of what she really wanted to sing, and even worrying, “If there comes a day when I stop singing, what will people remember me for?” Fortunately, in recent years she has finally found her own musical path. “Over these 10 years, it’s not about how many songs I've sung, but about finally finding my own musical road.”

When asked if she would challenge herself with acting, she laughed and waved her hand: “At the beginning of my career, directors did approach me for acting. I studied the script for a long time and even discussed it with my family. My dad, after hearing it, said: ‘You're not even particularly good-looking, why act?’ So I think I should focus on singing.”
Since winning the championship on “The Voice of China” in 2014, Zhang Bichen has experienced highs and periods of reflection, but has always stayed true to her musical roots. She confessed emotionally: “I once took a break from work, stepped out of public view, and did what I wanted. But my fans always waited for my new album, supporting my return to the stage. I’m truly grateful for that.”
Talking about her upcoming show in Malaysia, Zhang Bichen is exhilarated: “When I was previously in Malaysia for recording, I met many Malaysian fans who asked when I would have a concert here. Back then there weren’t even any initial plans, so I could only say ‘maybe.’ Now it’s finally happening, and I’m really happy.” She’s also familiar with Malaysia: “Earlier this year, when I was recording the variety show ‘Because of You’ in Malaysia, I stayed for a whole month, eating, drinking, and having fun everywhere. What impressed me most was how delicious the durian was! In Beijing, you can hardly get fresh ones. When I crave them, I can only get frozen durian to satisfy the craving, so during my trip in Malaysia, I tried every kind of durian available.”

She has also prepared special surprises for her Malaysian and Singaporean fans: “There will be some adjustments to the song list. I’ll especially perform ‘Liang Liang’ as a gift to fans who love costume dramas.” As for whether she would try singing in Malay? She scrunched her face in comic distress and said with a smile: “I don’t even know Cantonese anymore, let alone Malay!” But she didn’t rule it out entirely: “We’ll see, maybe I’ll learn a few words and give everyone a little surprise.” She made sure to remind all fans traveling from afar to support her in Malaysia and overseas: “Please take care of your own safety, remember to tell your parents that you’ve arrived safely, and practice my songs more so you can sing along with me at the concert—that would really make me happy!”

She admitted the process has been full of challenges: “My singing style has always leaned toward pop; I’ve never systematically learned vocal techniques. This time, to match the symphony orchestra, I have to retrain my vocals and make my voice thicker and fuller to blend with the symphony.”
