Malaysia Bans Import of 5 Types of Shrimp – Thailand Threatens WTO Complaint

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Suphachai, stated on the 10th that if bilateral negotiations fail, Thailand may file a complaint with ASEAN or the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the seafood trade dispute with Malaysia.

She criticized Malaysia’s decision to immediately halt the import of five types of Thai shrimp instead of consulting with the Thai side, calling the move “inappropriate.”

Thailand's Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Suriya, is expected to visit Malaysia before the 17th to negotiate the issue and seek a solution.

Suriya said, “I believe we can solve this problem together and resume Thailand’s shrimp exports to Malaysia. Trade benefits both sides, so there should be a solution.”

The dispute began last month, when border checkpoint inspections in Thailand detected chemical substances and antibiotic residues in Malaysian-exported sea bass, leading to stricter inspections and delayed clearance, resulting in fish spoilage.

Subsequently, the Malaysian government announced a temporary ban on importing five types of Thai shrimp starting June 1, 2026, and that stonehead fish from Thailand must present a mandatory analysis certificate before entry.
