(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for November 2024 decreased by 0.5% compared to November 2023, with the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages dropping by 1.2% and the non-food index declining by 0.3%.
The decrease in the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages is primarily attributed to a reduction in chicken prices under the meat category, which declined by 2.5% due to lower chicken feed costs.
Moreover, the vegetable category saw a decline of 4.6%, influenced by a decrease in the prices of onions and shallots from producing countries. The decline in the non-food index was mainly due to a 1.1% drop in the transport category, reflecting lower prices for cars and air tickets. The category of housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels declined by 0.9%, with a particular decrease in the costs of residential maintenance and repairs further contributing to the price drop.
On a monthly basis, the CPI for November 2024 increased by 0.3% compared to October 2024. This increase was driven by a 0.4% rise in the non-food index, while the index for food and non-alcoholic beverages saw a slight decline of 0.1%.
The non-food index increase was primarily due to rising prices for clothing and footwear (5.7%) and recreation and culture (1.1%). Meanwhile, the decline in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index was due to falling prices for fish and seafood (1.2%) and meat (0.3%).
The CPI measures the price changes of a basket of goods and services purchased by consumers during a specific period and is compiled monthly.
The list of items in the CPI is based on average household expenditure data from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES).
