On the 24th, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Kyrgyzstan that China will always be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of the international order. He offered four suggestions for the SCO and called on member states to work more closely together.
According to the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi said at the meeting that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the SCO. From its beginning with six countries strengthening military trust and fighting against the "three forces" in border areas, the SCO has expanded to 27 countries, covering nearly half the world's population, and is now cooperating in more than 50 fields. At present, the world is witnessing accelerated changes unseen in a century, with turbulence and transformation surging, calling for even closer cooperation among member states.
He put forward four proposals. First, uphold the "Shanghai Spirit" as a guiding star. Always use the "Shanghai Spirit" as the fundamental principle in handling the organization's internal affairs and external exchanges, strengthen strategic mutual trust, maintain unity and collaboration, firmly support each other, and adhere to openness and inclusiveness, using the "Shanghai Spirit" to illuminate the path toward a community with a shared future for mankind.
Second, build a firewall for peace and stability. Always advocate resolving disputes through dialogue, settling differences through consultation, and safeguarding peace through cooperation, while properly addressing regional and international hotspot issues. Accelerate the implementation of the "four security centers" to enhance the region's ability to respond to security risks and challenges.
Third, stimulate driving force for win-win development. Strengthen alignment of national development strategies and regional cooperation initiatives, promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, foster new growth areas in trade and investment, connectivity, technological innovation, green industries, digital economy, and artificial intelligence, jointly stabilize industrial and supply chains, and together generate more development achievements.
Fourth, create a demonstration zone for global governance. Safeguard the authority and role of the United Nations, uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and maintain the basic norms of international relations. Work with nearly 160 participants of global governance initiatives and more than 120 UN member states that support deeper cooperation with the SCO to explore establishing effective models for global governance with broad participation. Improve the organization's internal mechanisms and welcome more countries to join the SCO.
The meeting issued the "Statement by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Member States" and signed resolutions related to the preparations for the SCO Bishkek Summit. During the meeting, Wang Yi separately met with the foreign ministers of Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and Pakistan.
