This food safety incident recently occurred in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China. A woman and her colleagues were dining at a conveyor belt hot pot restaurant in the underground shopping mall on Zhongshan West Road, Guiyang, when they found live maggots crawling in the dipping sauce bowl. They were disgusted on the spot and went to the restroom to vomit.
What made the situation even more infuriating was that after being notified, the restaurant showed an indifferent attitude, did not apologize promptly, and even downplayed the issue by saying “it’s just protein.” The owner was only willing to offer 100 yuan as compensation, which the woman found unacceptable.
After media became involved, the hot pot restaurant owner eventually apologized to Ms. Chen and her colleagues. Both parties reached a settlement: the restaurant agreed to compensate 500 yuan (about 293 MYR) and pledged to strengthen its hygiene management to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
