(Kuala Lumpur, 6th) Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya will arrive in Malaysia on the 9th of this month to attend the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, as well as the 4th Ministerial Meeting of Cooperation for East Asian Cooperation and Palestinian Development (CEAPAD).
Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Takayuki Shikata said that this is Iwaya’s first visit to Malaysia since his appointment as Foreign Minister last October, reflecting Japan’s strong support for ASEAN’s centrality and underscoring the close ties between Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur.
He told Bernama: "This demonstrates Japan’s active engagement in Southeast Asian affairs, and our commitment to close cooperation with Malaysia on regional and global issues, especially in humanitarian aid, energy transition, education, and maritime security."
The 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled to be held from the 8th to the 11th of this month at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
Japan became ASEAN’s first dialogue partner in 1973 and formally established its partnership with ASEAN in 1977.
Over the decades, Japan has steadily expanded its cooperation with ASEAN, joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2004, appointing an ambassador to ASEAN in 2010, and establishing a permanent mission in Jakarta the following year.
In 2023, ASEAN-Japan relations were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, reflecting Tokyo’s continued support for ASEAN’s centrality and its commitment to regional cooperation in political, economic, and socio-cultural fields.
One of Japan’s key regional initiatives is CEAPAD, launched in 2013, aimed at coordinating support for Palestinian development.
Since CEAPAD’s inception, Malaysia has been an active participant in the conference, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause.
The 4th CEAPAD Ministerial Meeting, jointly hosted by Japan and Malaysia, will be held in Kuala Lumpur on the 11th of this month.
