OEMs Urged to Collaborate with Local Suppliers Shen Zhijin: Enhancing the Automotive Value Chain

Deputy Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Shen Zhijin, pointed out that Malaysia hopes original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will cooperate with local suppliers to enhance the overall value chain and ecosystem level through the new electric vehicle policy.

He said many people assume the government’s goal is to protect certain local enterprises and automakers, but in reality, the government’s bigger objective is to develop the entire industry ecosystem.

"We hope overseas automakers will help build our ecosystem. Currently, we have 150 to 180 Tier 1 suppliers, as well as 640 Tier 2 and Tier 3 parts and component manufacturers.

"We hope foreign manufacturers will work with them to enhance their capabilities and upgrade the value chain. This way, we will be ready to become exporters of parts and components and, in the future, be well-prepared for autonomous driving.”

He said this to reporters today after the 2nd ASEAN Automotive and Mobility Summit.
