Is Chinese TV Censorship Too Strict? Jing Boran’s Intimate Scenes Cut, Fans Outraged

Chinese drama heartthrob Jing Boran stars in the new series "Steel Forest" alongside actress Cai Wenjing. The show is adapted from a romance-mystery novel known for its risqué content, but the TV adaptation has turned it into a crime investigation drama. In the series, the leads play a married couple and originally had three intimate scenes. When the finale aired on the 12th, viewers noticed all the kissing scenes had been cut, and vented their anger on the official Weibo: “Why did you do this?”

Jing Boran plays a criminal psychology professor in "Steel Forest," while Cai Wenjing plays a policewoman. Their characters are husband and wife, developing love after tying the knot—a classic “married first, love later” storyline. The source material is known for its many explicit scenes, which drew curious fans before the show aired. In the drama, the couple gradually falls in love after marriage, but viewers soon noticed that almost all intimate scenes—like their first kiss in the office, an explosive kiss, and an underwater kiss—had been deleted. While a kissing scene is shown in the end credits as a subtitle image, it was missing from the actual broadcast, including the much-anticipated underwater reconciliation kiss, which was also cut.

The official Weibo of "Steel Forest" posted a still of the underwater kiss.
On the 12th, the official Weibo of "Steel Forest" shared a watermark-free still of the underwater kiss. Nearly a thousand comments flooded in: “Where’s the video? Where’s the behind-the-scenes? Just this one picture? You filmed it so beautifully, but then cut it all from the final version, I really don’t understand why an underwater breath-sharing scene can’t be shown,” “Why was it cut,” “What’s the reason for cutting the underwater kiss,” “I really don’t get it,” “What exactly are you cutting for? Is it censorship? What are the current review standards?” “I’m so angry I could cry.” Some netizens speculate that because the protagonists are portrayed as police officers, the romantic scenes had to be trimmed.
