According to Philippine media reports, police have arrested a suspect involved in the Senate shooting incident and are continuing to investigate the motives and identities of those connected to the case.
According to The Philippine Star, the arrested suspect is 44-year-old Oragon, who works as a driver hired by the National Bureau of Investigation, but is not an investigator himself.
A police spokesperson revealed that one person is currently in custody and has provided several names, but the information still needs further verification. Investigators also recovered shell casings, assault rifle magazines, and other items at the scene.
On Thursday (May 14), President Marcos Jr. held an emergency meeting with government and security officials to discuss the response to the incident.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night (May 13), when several law enforcement and military personnel entered the Philippine Senate building; multiple gunshots and screams were heard, and the building was briefly thrown into chaos and placed under total lockdown.
At a press conference on Thursday, Senator Nartates stated that the number of shots fired in the Senate may have been "no less than 30 times," but the exact number still needs to be verified via CCTV footage.
There is external speculation that this operation is related to the arrest of former National Police Chief Dela Rosa. Dela Rosa is currently wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity committed during Duterte's anti-drug campaign.
Philippine media cited Senate Secretariat officials as saying that 64-year-old Dela Rosa had been hiding in his Senate office since Monday (May 11) to avoid arrest and extradition, and left the Senate building at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.
It is reported that he is currently under "protective custody," which means that as long as he remains within the Senate premises, law enforcement authorities cannot arrest him.
New Senate President Cayetano said after the incident on Wednesday that Dela Rosa will "not be arrested for the time being," and stated that government officials have assured senators they will abide by the Supreme Court's instructions to give Dela Rosa time to respond to legal issues related to the ICC investigation into the Duterte administration's war on drugs.
