On the 17th, Philippine House Speaker Romualdez announced his resignation after being implicated in a corruption scandal. Representative Martin Romualdez was elected as the new Speaker that same day.
Romualdez is a cousin of Philippine President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.
In a statement released the same day, he said his resignation was to better cooperate with the anti-corruption investigation.
Just one hour after Romualdez's resignation, Faustino Lee, a long-time ally of Marcos Jr. with relatively low political profile, was elected as the new Speaker of the House without opposition.
According to Philippine media reports, Romualdez and several lawmakers were accused of being involved in a scandal over the misuse of funds from flood control infrastructure projects. On September 8, Senate President Escudero was removed from office due to a corruption scandal.
