The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Mohd Na'im, attended the goodwill gathering held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration today. He described Malaysia's multiculturalism as 'Together in Unity' (Serumpun bak serai, sesusun bak sirih).
He stated that all the agencies under his department have made unity agendas a priority to be implemented, however, achieving the unity agenda is only possible with cooperation from all parties.
He emphasized that the Department of Religious Affairs is willing to collaborate with all parties to continue strengthening social unity and harmony to create national prosperity.
The goodwill gathering is organized by the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (MACMA), Malaysian Muslim Welfare Organization (PERKIM), Hidayah Centre Foundation (HCF), Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), and Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).
Na'im had recently faced criticism due to the 'Interfaith Engagement Guidelines', making his attendance at such a reunion event naturally draw attention.
He noted that the goodwill gathering reflects the agenda of achieving social unity and harmony jointly by federal and state Islamic affairs agencies and non-governmental organizations.
On another note, regarding the social media circulation of a stallholder placing a notice not to sell corn to 'Keling', Na'im reminded all parties to consider and respect the sensitivities of the country's different races and religions.
"In this matter, we must act cautiously… (including) our actions and the sensitivities of other races."
"We do not know what comment or action of ours may cause dissatisfaction among other races."
"Therefore, respect is extremely important."
