KUCHING,June 13: An eight-year-old boy from Kampung Taee, Serian, is now receiving much-needed assistance from Hope Place Kuching after being referred by a social worker from Serian Hospital.

Romy Demian Mary lives with his mother, two siblings and grandparents in a dilapidated wooden stilt house.

According to his medical report and information from the social worker involved, Romy is severely malnourished and has a hearing impairment. Despite his condition, he remains hopeful and full of life.

“I made my own fishing rod, and I always dig for worms as bait,” Romy proudly shared with Hope Place volunteers, revealing his love for fishing in the nearby river during his free time.

Romy’s mother, Mary, 37, is a single mother struggling to make ends meet.

With limited job opportunities in the village, she relies heavily on fishing to feed her family.

Romy’s grandfather, Balan, 68, helps out by doing odd jobs and tending to a small vegetable garden at their home.

The family’s meals often depend solely on their daily catch and home-grown produce.

Mary also noted that Romy has a very selective diet, refusing to eat rice and only consuming small amounts of vegetables.

The family receives RM450 monthly from social welfare, and now Hope Place is stepping in with additional support, providing basic foods aid to help ease their burden.

Those who wish to help can reach out to Hope Place, also known as Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK), at 082-505987 or 013-5672775.
