MIRI,9 June: Curtin University Malaysia has launched a pioneering training initiative aimed at upskilling educators in Sarawak.
Held over two days at the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Sarawak Campus here, the ‘Outcome-Based Education with Knowledge Transfer Programme – Innovation in Teaching to Enhance Learning’ brought together 22 teaching professionals for an intensive professional development experience.
The programme focused on integrating Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Knowledge Transfer (KT) principles into everyday teaching, encouraging educators to rethink traditional classroom delivery and better prepare students for real-world demands.
Led by Dr Lynn Ling Yew Hua, a senior lecturer at Curtin Malaysia, the programme comprised six modules delivered by a team of academic experts from the university’s Faculty of Business.
“This initiative is not just about teaching techniques, but about empowering educators to become catalysts of change,” said Dr Ling.
“We are helping teachers deliver content in ways that are measurable, impactful and globally relevant.”
The curriculum covered a range of topics including peer evaluation, gamification, problem-based learning, and virtual reality (VR) integration particularly beneficial for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners.
Participants also explored the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating more personalised learning environments.
Developed in collaboration with the Miri District Education Office, the training modules were tailored to address local educational challenges while aligning with Malaysia’s broader national education reform agenda.
According to post-programme surveys, attendees cited a newfound confidence in applying active learning strategies and greater openness to integrating digital tools in the classroom.
“Professional development programmes like these offer more than just training, they foster a network of innovation, support, and shared expertise,” said Dr Ling.
Following the success of the pilot programme, Curtin Malaysia plans to partner with additional teacher training institutes and educational bodies across Malaysia.
