Due to its unique topography, China's mountain city Chongqing features staggered roads and buildings, creating a highly three-dimensional feel and earning it the nickname '8D magical city.' To overcome significant elevation differences that lead to time-consuming transportation, the local Wushan Goddess Major Escalator has recently started trial operations. This escalator system comprises 21 escalators, 8 elevators, and 4 moving walkways, elevating passengers from ground level to the mountain top with a vertical height of 242 meters—about as tall as an 80-story building.
Travel Time Reduced from 1 Hour to 20 Minutes
According to Chinese media reports, the Wushan Goddess Major Escalator is offering free trial rides for the public from the 12th to the 16th. The journey along Shennü Avenue, which used to take 1 hour from top to bottom, now only takes 20 minutes from the ground to the mountain road top with the escalator in operation.
The entire escalator system spans 905 meters, surpassing the length of the Chongqing Crown Escalator. Its commissioning has overcome the challenges posed by Wushan’s large elevation differences and inconvenient vertical transportation, building a three-dimensional transit model that connects vital locations such as Binjiang Road, museums, hospitals, and schools.
After the free trial period, starting from the 17th, the Wushan Goddess Major Escalator will charge 3 RMB (1.7 Ringgit) per person per ride.
