Canada Cancels Digital Tax That Sparked Trump's Fury, Canada-US Trade Talks Resume

On the eve of its implementation, Canada announced the cancellation of the digital services tax that targeted American tech giants such as Meta Platforms Inc, the parent company of Facebook, and Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, and has reopened stalled trade talks with the United States.

According to foreign media reports, the Canadian Ministry of Finance issued a statement late on the 29th, saying that Canadian Prime Minister Carney and U.S. President Trump will resume trade negotiations, aiming to reach a trade agreement by July 21.

Two days earlier, Trump had abruptly announced the "immediate termination" of all trade talks with Canada due to Canada's plan to begin imposing a digital services tax on U.S. tech companies.

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing Canada of a "blatant attack" by taxing U.S. tech companies, and vowed to announce within seven days the tariffs that Canada would have to pay to do business with the United States.

On Sunday, Trump reiterated that he would set new tariff rates on Canadian goods within a week.
