MUKAH,16 July: Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine praised PETRONAS’ efforts in sparking students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through STEM-based programmes.
He said such efforts are crucial, as STEM education plays a vital role in developing a skilled society in these fields.
“In addition, it prepares a high-quality workforce with the potential to contribute to new innovations.
“This initiative also aligns with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025, which emphasises STEM education at the school level through curricular and co-curricular activities,” he said while officiating at the PETRONAS Empowering Knowledge Programme: Discover PETRONAS @ School Mukah at CENTEXS Mukah yesterday (July 15).
In this regard, Royston expressed hope that PETRONAS will continue to be a responsible corporate entity, maintaining its commitment to improving Sarawak’s socioeconomic landscape and promoting holistic development for the wellbeing of a sustainable society.
“Collaboration between the government, PETRONAS, and other stakeholders is key to realising a shared vision — sustaining the country’s prosperity and sustainability for future generations.
“Thank you, PETRONAS and its strategic partner, the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), because through this cooperation, we can strengthen the STEM field in line with the aspirations of the Malaysia Education Blueprint,” he added.
At the same time, Royston hopes this effort will bring significant benefits to students and serve as the starting point for more such programmes in the future.
Meanwhile, PETRONAS Senior Manager Nor Azam Abg Zawawi said the programme is part of PETRONAS’ organisational sustainability agenda, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
“This programme also aligns with the seven strategic thrusts of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), especially in the areas of education and human capital development.
“To date, we have successfully implemented this programme in key locations across Sarawak such as Kuching, Sri Aman, Miri, Bintulu, Lawas, Limbang, Gedong, and Kapit.
“More than 30,000 students across Malaysia have benefited from this programme,” he said.
He added that in Mukah, the programme involved 120 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Three Rivers, SMK St Patrick, and SMK Mukah.
