(Saratok, 27th) An 85-year-old elderly woman was involved in a traffic accident near Nanga Assam on the Pan Borneo Highway yesterday morning, where she was struck by a passenger van and died at the scene.
The accident occurred at around 9:45am this morning at the 402.4 km mark of the Pan Borneo Highway heading towards Sri Aman, involving a Toyota Hiace passenger van and the elderly pedestrian.
Saratok District Police Chief, Superintendent Mathew Manggie, indicated that the deceased was an Iban woman from Saratok. At the time of the incident, she was believed to be crossing from the central road divider to the left lane.

He said: "A 77-year-old male driver from Sri Aman was driving in the left lane towards Sri Aman and tried to avoid the pedestrian at the time."
"However, as the distance was too close, the driver was unable to avoid her in time and ended up hitting the deceased."
In a statement, he said the woman sustained severe head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.
He said the body was later sent to Saratok Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The driver, who works as a vegetable transporter, was uninjured, but the passenger van's front windshield and right front bumper were damaged.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
