Tornado in Hubei Causes 8 Deaths; Student Recounts: An Entire Bedroom Wall Collapsed!

Tornadoes and other severe convective weather have hit Huangshi, Huanggang and other regions in Hubei Province, China, resulting in 8 deaths.

On the night of July 6th, multiple netizens from Hubei posted on social platforms stating that Huangzhou District in Huanggang, Hubei was struck by a tornado, and Huanggang Normal University was affected.

A student from Huanggang Normal University told reporters that at the time of the incident, he was in the Lixing Building on campus reviewing foreign literature. As the strong wind hit, he immediately hid under a desk. The building's glass windows soon exploded, students' cries echoed throughout, and even the outdoor units of the air conditioners were blown over.

This student told the reporter that the roof of the school's sports field was also overturned by the strong wind. Some students who were studying in the library or empty classrooms were cut by shattered glass. He only returned to his dormitory after the winds had abated, and along the way, almost all the trees had been blown over. At present, the wind has mostly subsided, but the dormitory area is without electricity and water. He added that the school has not yet started summer vacation, and the final exams originally scheduled for this Friday have not been officially postponed.

On social media, multiple netizens from Huanggang, Hubei shared the conditions of their homes. Some residents reported that the bedroom wall was blown away and home rooftops were lifted by the wind.

Several meteorology enthusiasts previously analyzed that the tornado may have been triggered by the warm-core low vortex induced by the remnants of Typhoon Maysak, which had moved inland.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on the 6th, multiple places in eastern Hubei encountered severe convective weather. That night, between 7 and 11 pm, thunderstorms and strong winds occurred in Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, Xianning and other regions, with wind forces reaching 8 to 13 on the Beaufort scale in 53 townships, among which two townships reached level 13. Tornadoes appeared in some townships.

The Hubei Provincial Emergency Management Department stated that as of around 11 pm on the 6th, this severe convective weather had already caused 8 deaths and 1 person missing. The extent of the disaster is still being verified.

Over 3,500 provincial, municipal, and county-level rescue personnel have been mobilized in Huangshi, Ezhou, Xianning and other affected areas for disaster relief and rescue operations.
