(Silongmun, 2nd) Bihuk District Councillor Dato Henry Chinah expressed his hope that Silongmun will continue to develop and become an important trade hub between Sarawak and Indonesia's Kalimantan in the future.
In his speech during the Chinese New Year Decoration Lighting Ceremony held in downtown Silongmun on Sunday (February 1st), he pointed out that Silongmun’s population has continued to grow over the past ten years, increasing from 68,000 in 2016 to the current 76,000, and he hopes this growth trend will continue.
He also stated that Silongmun has seen significant changes in the past decade, with rapid development of small and medium-sized industries thanks to the people's efforts and the long-standing peace and harmony in society.
“We will continue to attract investment and economic activity to Silongmun so that all the people can benefit,” he said.
On the other hand, Henry, who is also the Deputy Minister of Transport (River Transport and Maritime), said he was moved by the active participation of other ethnic groups in preparing for the event, reflecting the vibrancy of peaceful coexistence among different races and religious communities in Silongmun.
He said that apart from the Chinese community, the Bidayuh and Malay communities also lent a helping hand with the decorations, which is a good sign for the continued peaceful co-existence of all ethnic groups in the district.
“This event is of great significance to the Chinese community in Silongmun, and the participation of other ethnic groups perfectly demonstrates our harmonious way of life, which is also an important element in promoting the social and economic development of Silongmun,” he said.
Henry added that the event is also especially meaningful to the Chinese community, as it marks the 206th anniversary since the Chinese migrated from Sambas, Indonesia to Silongmun.
