(Miri, 23rd) Deputy Minister of Tourism of Sarawak, Dato' Sebastian Ting , expressed that the concurrent celebration of the festive season by all ethnic groups showcases Sarawak's unity and harmony.
He stated that today is already the 26th day of the Lunar New Year and everyone is still celebrating the Spring Festival, with activities continuing into next week, unlike before when celebrations ended after the Lantern Festival.
Dato' Ting made these remarks at the Chinese New Year gathering organized by the Pei Min Middle School Alumni Association in Miri today.
He pointed out that the culture of unity and harmony among different ethnic groups must be preserved, and it is essential for children to understand this excellent culture.
“The government is focusing on education, so starting in 2026, free university education will be provided at local public universities. Therefore, students must study diligently. In addition, beginning this year, the government is providing an annual allowance of RM1,200 to university students in Sarawak, which is something not available elsewhere and is enviable.”
He also mentioned that there was excessive rain during this year's New Year, leading to natural disasters in Miri that resulted in casualties, which is regrettable. Therefore, the open house event organized this year with the Mayor was conducted in a subdued manner.
