Rose Wins VMA Song of the Year; Lady Gaga Clinches Artist of the Year

The annual music event, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA), was held in New York, USA, on the morning of the 8th (Malaysia time). Leading with 12 nominations, America's versatile diva Lady Gaga was rumored to be absent due to her concert being held locally at the same time, but ultimately she still appeared at the awards ceremony, much to the surprise of fans present!

Appearing in an all-black look, Lady Gaga beat out fellow pop queens Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to seize the "Artist of the Year" award. When she took to the stage to accept the trophy, she said she needed to leave immediately: "I wish I could stay and watch all the amazing performances, but I must return to Madison Square Garden [the concert venue]." As for the other major award Lady Gaga contended for, "Song of the Year" was taken by the catchy hit "APT.", sung by BLACKPINK member Rose and Latin superstar Bruno Mars, with Rose going on stage to accept the award. However, the "Best K-pop" award that Rose was vying for was taken instead by her bandmate Lisa and Doja Cat for their collaboration "Born Again".

In addition to Lady Gaga, American diva Mariah Carey also achieved a breakthrough, winning her first-ever VMA since the start of her career. She received the "Best R&B Video" award for her MV "Type Dangerous." When accepting the award, she said she never expected to wait more than 30 years to win her first VMA.
