On the evening of the 13th, in the French capital Paris, a man armed with a knife and scissors attempted to attack an on-duty police officer during a flame lighting ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe. He was promptly subdued by another officer who opened fire, and later died after being taken to the hospital.
No police officers were injured in the incident. The French National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case and has released information about the suspect's background. The suspect was born in 1978 and had previously been charged with terrorism-related offenses in Belgium. In 2013, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison by a Brussels court for attempted murder of a police officer.
The suspect first served his sentence in Belgium and was then transferred to France in 2015 to serve the remainder of his term. He was released on Christmas Eve last year and has since been under supervision by the French authorities.
