Best Actor Nick Cheung recently appeared as a guest on Carol Cheng's YouTube show “The Do Show,” where he openly shared stories about life with his wife, Esther Kwan. Rarely, he also revealed that during a career bottleneck years ago, he once thought about leaving the Hong Kong entertainment industry.
For years, it had been rumored that he left ATV voluntarily due to work pressure, but on the show he set the record straight: he was actually caught off guard by a phone call from ATV suddenly informing him that his contract would not be renewed. This dealt a heavy blow to him and left him at a loss.
Although, through a twist of fate, he was soon recruited to sign with TVB's management, Nick Cheung felt mentally and physically exhausted and still disheartened. He requested leave from TVB and headed far away to South Africa, with the intention of not returning to work in the Hong Kong entertainment scene. Fortunately, he eventually adjusted his mindset. He later made a comeback and reached a turning point in his life with the TVB drama “Secret of the Heart.”
Besides his career, Nick Cheung also talked about his life. Although he is a two-time Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor, in private his lifestyle is very down-to-earth, with surprisingly low material demands. He revealed that the watch he wears only costs a few thousand Hong Kong dollars (1,000 HKD is about 162 SGD), and his biggest expense in recent years was purchasing a vintage car.
Talking about his family's financial philosophy, Nick Cheung showed his unconditional trust in his wife, frankly saying he has no concept of investment or financial management and that his personal daily expenses are extremely low. As a result, he feels perfectly at ease entrusting all family finances to Esther Kwan.
