(Kuala Lumpur, 27th) The Prime Minister’s Senior Press Secretary, Tengku Nasru, pointed out that East Timor’s accession as the 11th member state of ASEAN and the signing of the “Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement” between Cambodia and Thailand mark two historic milestones achieved while our country is serving as Chairman of ASEAN.
He stated that East Timor’s entry makes the Southeast Asian family more united and its sovereignty more complete. This is not just a symbol of diplomacy, but also the outcome of our country’s firm and steadfast support through training, technical assistance, and capacity building to enable East Timor’s participation in ASEAN.
“Yesterday (26th), Thailand and Cambodia signed the 'Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement' in the presence of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump, marking the starting point for ending disputes between the two countries.”
On Monday (October 27), Tengku Nasru said in a live broadcast from the Prime Minister’s Office: “This is the successful result of the peace talks initiated by the Prime Minister since July last year.”
He indicated that the signing of the peace agreement demonstrates the willingness of both countries to cease hostilities, release prisoners, and allow ASEAN observers to assess the implementation of peace on the ground.
Regarding the following day’s ASEAN Summit and related meetings, he said the focus will be on strengthening regional economic cooperation, digitalization, clean energy transition, and supply chain resilience.
On Monday (27th), five important summits will be held: the 26th ASEAN-Korea Summit, the ASEAN Plus Three (ASEAN+3) Summit with China, Japan, and South Korea, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, the East Asia Summit (EAS), and the ASEAN-United Nations Summit.
He expects Anwar to hold meetings with other leaders and, together with other leaders, attend the ASEAN banquet held on the second day of the summit.
