As the United States and Iran announced that they have reached a preliminary peace agreement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for promoting peace and stability in the Middle East while attending an event on Monday.
According to the website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi delivered a speech at a reception in Beijing celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He stated that as an influential force for stability, constructiveness, and progress in today’s world, the SCO should better fulfill its role, take responsibility for promoting world peace, development, cooperation, and win-win outcomes, and set an example.
The SCO is an organization composed of 10 member countries, including China, India, Iran, Pakistan, and several former Soviet republics.
Wang Yi emphasized the need to uphold the “Shanghai Spirit.” Perseverance and good execution will ensure that SCO cooperation grows deeper, the path becomes broader, relations become smoother, and cohesion, action, and appeal continue to be enhanced. We must improve global governance by practicing true multilateralism, adhering to the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits, safeguarding the authority and role of the United Nations, and advocating for an equal and orderly multipolar world and an inclusive, beneficial, and open economic globalization.
He also said it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility by adhering to a common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security outlook, promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, assisting Afghanistan in reconstruction and development, and achieving long-term regional stability. Sustainable development should be promoted by creating new drivers of growth in trade, investment, connectivity, scientific and technological innovation, green industry, and the digital economy, accelerating the establishment of a development bank, strengthening industrial and supply chains, and enhancing the value chain. He called for deepening good-neighborly and friendly cooperation, promoting cultural exchange, advancing dialogue among civilizations, supporting people-to-people friendship, and jointly building the “Five Homes” of peace, security, prosperity, beauty, and friendship.
Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif, who mediated between the US and Iran, announced on Monday that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement to immediately and permanently cease military actions on all fronts, and have agreed to officially sign the agreement in Switzerland this Friday (June 19).
