On the morning of January 1, 2025, the PLA Eastern Theater Command released an MV titled "Chinese," with background music performed by Hong Kong singer Andy Lau. The MV not only includes various training scenes of the PLA but also features footage from Andy Lau's concerts and interviews with mainland Chinese table tennis player Ma Long and others who recently visited Taiwan.
The Eastern Theater Command stated: "On the first day of 2025, the Eastern Theater Command released a significant MV 'Chinese' to celebrate the New Year, showcasing the readiness and determination of the theater command's soldiers to defend national unity and their confidence in their abilities."
After an 11-year hiatus, Andy Lau returned to Taiwan for concerts from October 31 to November 3 last year. His inclusion of "Chinese" in his setlist sparked criticism from many pro-green camp individuals, with some labeling him as a "pro-Communist artist." Wang Yichuan, who has been nominated as a non-constituency legislator for the Democratic Progressive Party, also questioned on social media that the segment of Andy Lau singing "Chinese" at the Taipei Arena resembled scenes from a concert in China, calling his concert "a very, very Chinese design."
