Selangor, 27 May:Selangor is expected to finalise its decision on the ban on e-cigarettes or vape sales next week, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
However, the decision depends on the progress of the proposal paper to be presented by the state executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin during the Selangor State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting this week or the next.
“Public health councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin is currently preparing the paper to be presented at the MMKN meeting. I believe by this week or next, we will decide based on the facts we have at hand.
“We will make a decision based on the findings we receive. At the same time, we are also discussing with vape product operators, as most of them are based in Selangor, so we must consider the impact.
“I am waiting for the paper, and we will examine all aspects. There have been requests from vape operators, and we will listen as well, but throughout our preliminary discussions, the priority remains public health, especially for the future generation,” he said.
Amirudin was speaking to the press after an exclusive sharing session ‘Reflections on the Global Economy: A Quranic Perspective’ with Nouman Ali Khan last night.
Previously, the state government had instructed all local authorities to seize and confiscate advertisements related to e-cigarettes or vape products on all physical platforms, including digital or LED billboards.
Jamaliah said the action is in line with the provisions of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, to protect the public, particularly the younger generation, from the increasingly concerning threat of vaping.
Terengganu and Johor are among the states that have implemented a ban on vape sales earlier, with Terengganu announcing enforcement from August 1 this year, while Johor has enforced the ban since 2016.
