Malaysian citizens planning to travel or work in Thailand should take note: the Thai government has recently published the latest announcement in the Royal Gazette, clearly listing 8 types of areas where the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited. The relevant regulations take immediate effect; however, drinking is still exceptionally allowed in certain designated areas.
According to the announcement, the drinking ban covers public areas such as roads, vehicles, government agencies, public transport piers, passenger terminals, parks, and railway systems, with the aim of maintaining social order and public safety.
Regarding roads and vehicles, authorities prohibit anyone from selling alcoholic beverages on the road, inside vehicles, or in moving means of transportation, while drivers and passengers are also banned from drinking inside vehicles.
In addition, it is forbidden to sell or drink alcoholic beverages within the premises of state-owned enterprises and government agencies. However, areas designated as shops, clubs, private residential areas, or traditional banquet venues can be exempted.
The announcement also stipulates that public passenger piers, ferries, land passenger terminals, and factory areas as defined by the "Factory Act" are entirely banned from the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, alcohol production factories are not affected.
In public places, public areas managed by government agencies and general public parks are also included in the alcohol ban, unless such sites are listed as designated leisure areas.
As for the railway system, except for specially approved events held in specific air-conditioned areas of the Bangkok railway station, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all train carriages and railway station premises.
The announcement points out that if a special event is held in a designated area of Bangkok railway station, the host must implement security screening measures to prevent children and adolescents from accessing alcoholic beverages and must obtain prior approval from the Minister of Public Health.
However, it has been noted that this is not a new "total alcohol ban" policy in Thailand. Some of these regulations have existed for a long time—now, the government has merely consolidated and unified the announcement, making the scope of law enforcement more defined.
Therefore, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, hotels, and other tourist entertainment venues in Thailand can still legally sell alcoholic beverages, but must continue to comply with local operating hours and relevant regulatory rules.
