A high-rise building in Bangkok, Thailand, collapsed during an earthquake in Myanmar this March. On the 7th, Thai prosecutors charged 23 people involved in the case, including construction tycoon Premchai.
According to AFP, on March 28, a massive 7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar, causing thousands of deaths. This 30-story building collapsed within seconds after the quake occurred.
The building was originally intended for use by the Thai Audit Office after its completion. It was the only structure in Bangkok to collapse in the earthquake, with a total of 89 people killed at the scene, most of them construction workers.
The Office of the Attorney General of Thailand stated that the case has been submitted to the criminal court, and a verdict is expected within a few months.
In a statement, the Attorney General's Office said: "Investigators agreed to prosecute 23 individuals and legal entities on grounds of professional misconduct and document forgery."
The indictment names 16 individuals and 7 companies, as well as the names of personnel representing some of the defendant companies, including a construction company and a Chinese construction enterprise.
Investigation officials from the Ministry of Justice previously stated they are examining the quality of building materials used at the site.
Thai construction tycoon Premchai, president of Italian-Thai Development Company, has also been charged. If convicted, the 71-year-old Premchai could face up to 10 years in prison.
Italian-Thai Development Company is one of Thailand's top construction firms, and is also among those charged by the prosecution this time.
