(Miri, 13th) Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian stated that the appointment of city councilors is not merely a political appointment but is approved by the Sarawak Cabinet, making it a part of the local government. Therefore, the position of city councilor is very important, and they should support government policies, be accountable to local governments, and work collaboratively with city councils, government departments, and the Sarawak government as a team.
He said that city councilors are also front-line personnel of the government and must be prepared to serve the people around the clock, while also conveying issues to the city council and government institutions.
Sim Kui Hian, who is also Sarawak's Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, stated this during the swearing-in ceremony of the new term of city councilors at the Miri City Council.
He pointed out that city councilors must ensure close contact with the community so that residents can know their respective city councilors while ensuring residents can be contacted instantly and assistance can be provided at any time.
"Therefore, there must be close coordination and cooperation between city councilors, local councils, the community, and the government to ensure Sarawak achieves prosperity and the goal of ensuring the quality of life for the people."
He also mentioned that the Miri City Council was upgraded to a city council in 2005, and its jurisdiction is larger than Singapore, so the responsibilities of city councilors are very significant.
"Currently, it is essential to continue promoting post-2030 development strategies, such as increasing the number of doctors. Therefore, as Sarawak's revenue continues to increase, longer-term and stable development objectives must be formulated."
