(Bandar Seri Begawan, 30th) The Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE), through the Standards Division of Weights and Measures (SDT), together with relevant government agencies, recently conducted a joint enforcement inspection at Muara International Fish Landing Sdn Bhd.
This operation aimed to enforce the Weights and Measures Act 1983 (Chapter 151), to ensure that all weighing and measuring instruments used for trade are effective, accurate, and duly registered with the Standards Division of Weights and Measures (SDT).
During the inspection, a total of 12 weighing and measuring instruments used for trade were seized. Among them, 11 did not meet legal requirements, including 3 with expired registrations and 8 that were unregistered.
The enforcement department has issued seizure notices, and all non-compliant instruments have been confiscated. Owners are required to report to the Standards Division of Weights and Measures (SDT) within 7 working days from the issuing date of the notice for corrective action and to ensure compliance. Instruments that have completed annual verification or new registrations have been returned to their respective owners for use in trading.
At the same time, traders and users of weighing and measuring instruments are reminded to comply with the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994, in particular regulation 3(2), which stipulates that it is illegal for anyone to use, in trade, an instrument which does not bear a stamp or has not been certified.
Upon conviction, offenders may be subject to a fine not exceeding $1,000.00, imprisonment for up to three months, or both. In addition, such instruments may be confiscated, and any trade conducted using such instruments is considered invalid.
