Datong, Shanxi, experienced a 4.2-magnitude earthquake on Monday (December 22) night, marking at least the third quake in the area in four months, with tremors felt across many regions in northern China.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Lingqiu County, Datong City, Shanxi Province at 8:31 PM on Monday. The earthquake had a focal depth of 8 kilometers, with the epicenter located at 39.32 degrees north latitude and 114.39 degrees east longitude.
Residents from Shanxi, Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, and other areas reported feeling the quake on social media platforms. Posts included, “There were tremors in Shijiazhuang,” “I felt my bed shake in Fengtai, Beijing,” and “It was felt in Tianjin.” Internet users from Baoding, Hebei, and Changping, Beijing also reported similar sensations.
Previously, on August 16 this year, two earthquakes struck Yunzhou District, Datong, Shanxi within a minute. At 4:46:22 PM, a 3.8-magnitude earthquake occurred with a focal depth of 11 kilometers, followed about a minute later by a 3.5-magnitude tremor at a depth of 10 kilometers.
