Thailand Eases Alcohol Ban During Buddhist Festivals: Specific Venues Allowed to Sell

Thai Prime Minister Phetchontan signed an announcement from the Prime Minister's Office, unveiling the 'Regulation on Prohibited Days for the Sale of Alcoholic Beverages 2025,' which clearly stipulates the sale of alcoholic beverages during important Buddhist festival days. The announcement will take effect on May 10, 2025.

According to a report by 'Thai Headline News' on the 9th, under the announcement, the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on important Buddhist festival days such as Makha Bucha Day, Vesak Day, Asalha Bucha Day, the beginning of Buddhist Lent, and the end of Buddhist Lent, except in certain specified venues. Permitted venues include:

(1) International airports providing service to passengers;

(2) Legal entertainment venues as defined by the 'Entertainment Venue Act';

(3) Tourist areas or sightseeing areas, where venues operate similarly to entertainment venues, as announced by the Minister of Public Health following the recommendation of the Minister of Interior;

(4) Legal hotels as defined by the 'Hotel Act';

(5) Venues hosting national or international large-scale special events with substantial public attendance.

The specific list of venues will be announced by the Minister of Public Health based on the advice of the Minister of Tourism and Sports.
