(Bandar Seri Begawan, 6th) In light of recent incidents of ATM card skimming, the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) has issued a notice to assure the public that the Central Bank is working closely with the Brunei Association of Banks (BAB) to strengthen preventive measures and security controls, in order to reduce risks within the financial system and prevent future unauthorized withdrawal incidents.

The Brunei Central Bank emphasized that, in fulfilling its responsibility to maintain financial stability and safeguard public interests, all banks and financial institutions must implement robust control measures to prevent, detect, and respond to fraud and unauthorized transactions. This includes regularly inspecting ATMs, enhancing surveillance, and promptly identifying any suspicious or unusual activities.

To date, banks and financial institutions have swiftly taken preventive and corrective actions to address public concerns and reassure affected customers.

At the same time, the Brunei Central Bank advises the public to remain vigilant and follow bank guidelines by taking the following steps to safeguard account security:

a. Inspect: Before using an ATM, check if the card reader and keypad have been tampered with. If you find any counterfeit keyboard or hidden cameras, do not use the machine and immediately report to the bank.

b. Cover: Shield the keypad when entering your password, never disclose your card or PIN information to others, and stay aware of your surroundings.

c. Monitor: Regularly review your account statements and enable transaction alerts via SMS or through banking apps.

d. Report: If you notice any unauthorized or suspicious transactions, contact the bank's call center immediately.

Victims of scam activity should also file a report with the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), either by visiting the nearest police station or calling 993.

The Brunei Central Bank reminds the public that for any inquiries, you may call +673 8380007 during office hours, or email fci@bdcb.gov.bn
for assistance. BDCB reiterates its commitment to maintaining Brunei's financial stability and protecting the integrity of the financial system as well as consumer rights.
