Jay Chou is set to release his long-awaited new album, Son of the Sun, after a hiatus of 3 years and 8 months, and even before its official debut, the album has already attracted much attention from all sides. In particular, the origin of the album’s name is quite humorous—it was actually a nickname given to Jay Chou by ‘God of Songs’ Jacky Cheung. Back in May 2023, during Jay Chou’s Carnival concert in Hong Kong, there were several days of heavy rain, but just before the start of the concert, the rain miraculously stopped. Jacky Cheung then specially presented Jay Chou with a mango labeled ‘Son of the Sun’ along with a handwritten card, validating Jay’s lucky energy as like the ‘Son of the Sun’. This makes the new album title even more meaningful.
Two Mega Stars with a Great Relationship and Fun Interactions
Named by Jacky Cheung, Son of the Sun includes 12 brand new original tracks, plus a special addition of Jay Chou’s Christmas Star (first released on his YouTube channel), for a total of 13 songs. The first lead single’s music video, also titled Son of the Sun, is 6 minutes and 58 seconds long—longer than some mini-dramas, and just as rich in content. When Jacky Cheung humorously dubbed Jay Chou as the ‘Son of the Sun’ and personally gifted him a mango, Jay Chou was so touched he said, ‘It was like the sun was shining in my heart.’ Now, making it the title of his new album only further reflects the great friendship between these music superstars.
At Jacky Cheung’s 60+ World Tour concert last year at Taipei Arena, he also jokingly referenced Jay Chou while discussing the importance of songwriting: ‘What’s so special about songs I write? It’s because I very rarely write songs, so, as the saying goes, what’s rare is valuable, which makes my songs pretty special. Jay Chou’s songs, well, are just… too many.’ The joke had the whole audience of thousands erupting in laughter. At that time, Jay Chou had also sent a flower basket to congratulate Jacky Cheung.
