(Naypyidaw, 9th) The Myanmar military government plans to hold a nationwide election in December this year. The Myanmar Union Election Commission stated that, apart from areas not controlled by the military government, all townships nationwide will conduct voting based on security situations on a rotating basis.
Private Myanmar media "Eleven Media" quoted the Election Commission as reporting that the commission will hold voting days in phases and announce the voting dates in batches. The commission will arrange voting days according to the security situation in each region at the time.
According to the commission's current statistics, out of the country's 330 townships, 267 townships have security situations suitable for voting.
The commission also stated that the current election will adopt both the First Past the Post (FPTP) and Proportional Representation (PR) electoral systems. Due to the adoption of new electoral systems, constituencies in various regions and states will be redefined, allowing political parties to participate in the election.
The commission said it is formulating parliamentary election laws and related regulations consistent with the new electoral system, with specific details to be announced after the law is promulgated.
This election will use electronic voting machines. The commission stated that electronic voting machines have been tested at central institutions, cabinet departments, universities, social organizations, and political parties in Naypyidaw and nine states, with no errors found in the process.
The commission also stated that the electronic voting machines are not connected to the internet, have no WiFi or Bluetooth functions, and do not use the Windows operating system, making them very simple and secure voting devices.
Since the Myanmar military launched a coup in 2021, overthrowing the elected government, it has repeatedly promised to hold elections to return power to the people, but due to civil war, the nationwide state of emergency has been extended and the election delayed multiple times.
