Flight Attendant Drug Case Escalates: Australian Federal Police Head to Thailand

Published at Jul 02, 2026 11:40 am
On the afternoon of July 1, representatives from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) visited the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) of Thailand to hold talks with Secretary-General Suraya. The meeting focused on exchanging investigative information and coordinating cross-border operations in relation to the recently uncovered case of a crew member from a well-known Thai airline allegedly smuggling heroin into Australia.

The two sides discussed the latest progress in the investigation, which includes tracing the identity of the intended recipient of the package carried by the implicated crew member, determining the intended drop-off location, and uncovering connections to transnational drug trafficking networks. The case scope is expected to expand further as more links are explored.

In addition, both sides conducted in-depth exchanges on strengthening cooperation in combating transnational drug crimes. Given that Thailand has in recent years been repeatedly exploited by criminal groups as a drug transit hub, and Australia is one of the major destinations, the two countries plan to further enhance intelligence sharing, improve border inspections, and bolster their ability to prevent drug smuggling, working together to crack down on transnational crime networks.

It is understood that, in addition to representatives from the Australian Federal Police, law enforcement personnel wearing uniforms emblazoned with "Australian Border Force (ABF)" were also present at the meeting. ABF is mainly responsible for immigration, customs, and border security, as well as enforcing drug smuggling and transnational crime laws.

A Thai female flight attendant was arrested at Melbourne Airport for suspected smuggling of more than one kilogram of heroin into Australia. The street value of the involved drugs is estimated at around AUD 500,000 (about MYR 1.41 million).
