(North Korea, 13th) — North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. Kim Jong Un stated that North Korea is willing to unconditionally support all measures taken by Moscow to resolve the Ukraine issue.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released a press statement on Sunday (July 13) saying that on Saturday (12th), Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, met Lavrov in the port city of Wonsan during Lavrov’s visit to North Korea for the second round of strategic dialogue between the DPRK and Russian foreign ministers.
During this meeting, both sides exchanged views on a series of important issues, including fulfilling last June’s “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty” reached by the leaders of the DPRK and Russia, further strengthening and developing the DPRK-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership, safeguarding their common core interests, cooperation matters in various fields, and international and regional situations.
Kim Jong Un said that the two countries share identical perspectives on all strategic issues, which is in keeping with the level of their alliance and demonstrates the high strategic level of the DPRK-Russia relationship.
He also indicated that the two countries will respond proactively and positively to the rapidly changing international geopolitical situation. The two sides’ coordinated and harmonious diplomatic stances will make a positive contribution to ensuring peace and security in the region and the world.
Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, Pyongyang and Moscow have grown closer. North Korea has provided troops and weapons to Russia for use in the Ukraine war and pledged to offer more military support.
During the meeting, Kim Jong Un told Lavrov that North Korea is willing to unconditionally support and stand with all measures taken by the Russian leadership to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
Kim Jong Un also emphasized his belief that the Russian military and people will achieve victory in accomplishing the sacred cause of defending the nation’s dignity and fundamental interests.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Lavrov told Kim Jong Un that Russian President Putin "hopes to continue direct contact (with the North Korean side) in the near future."
Prior to meeting with Kim Jong Un, Lavrov held talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Wonsan. The two sides issued a joint statement pledging to support the protection of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Reuters quoted Russian media, stating that during his meeting with Kim Jong Un, Lavrov described DPRK-Russia relations as an "invincible brotherhood," and thanked Kim Jong Un for sending troops to Russia.
Previously, Kim Jong Un had sent more than 10,000 soldiers to support Russian military operations. Pyongyang has also pledged to send around 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to assist in the reconstruction of Russia’s bordering Kursk region.
