To slow down the decline in population, China has actively promoted marriage and childbirth among those of eligible age in recent years. Some areas have started offering cash rewards for marriage, with Longgui Nanling Village in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, proposing a trial scheme this year where a maximum of 40,000 RMB (24,000 RM) can be claimed as a bonus.
Reports from Caixin and other Chinese media on the 26th mentioned the above, noting that many places, including Guangzhou and Zhejiang, have long been exploring marriage and childbirth incentive policies. As of January this year, Nanling Village officially implemented the "Initial Marriage Reward Implementation Plan (Trial)," with a maximum of 40,000 RMB available; in late April, they added the "Childbirth Subsidy Plan," where eligible families completing "marriage + childbirth" can receive a total reward of up to 100,000 RMB (60,000 RM).
Meanwhile, Zhejiang Province is also actively improving its fertility support policy system. In March, the local government announced the "Notice on Several Measures to Improve the Fertility Support Policy System," encouraging areas with the appropriate conditions to distribute marriage red envelopes, consumption coupons, and other benefits to eligible marriage registration subjects.
The report stated that, in fact, several regions in Zhejiang had previously introduced marriage reward policies. For example, in April 2023, Shangyu District in Shaoxing City launched 13 measures to optimize fertility, including providing a gift package worth 1,000 RMB (600 RM) to every couple registered locally to marry; in August of the same year, Changshan County in Quzhou City announced that for couples registering for their first marriage locally, with the woman being 25 years old or younger (and at least one party being a Changshan household), a reward of 1,000 RMB would be given.
Similarly, since January 1st this year, Lvliang City in Shanxi has been offering a reward of 1,500 RMB (900 RM) to couples registering for their first marriage, where the woman is 35 years old or younger.
