Carina Lau recently appeared on the travel reality show "Blossom Road 2". When asked why many top Hong Kong stars don't participate in reality shows, she revealed that the producers had asked her to invite Chow Yun-Fat and Jacky Cheung several times, but they absolutely refused to participate. "They just focus on making movies," she said, and used her own socially-anxious husband Tony Leung as an example: "If you asked my husband to join, he'd be scared to death. And it definitely wouldn't be any fun. Everyone would be talking, and he'd be the only one not speaking. But his inner world is very rich; in books and films, it may be far broader than ours."
It is reported that the "Singer" series had made great efforts to invite Jacky Cheung to participate; reportedly, he rejected the invitation four times, and other singing shows have also tried to get him as a mentor or judge. Jacky Cheung once said bluntly that he greatly admires artists who go on "Singer" and allow judges to evaluate their music, but he's not sure whether the judges in the audience are really qualified. He frankly admitted that he cannot find the motivation to participate in competitions anymore, and that he has already been in so many competitions: "We came from competition backgrounds, then started releasing records, then would compare with so-and-so, and then compete again and again—it’s been exhausting all the way through." He said he is not against these shows, but "I just can’t get past my own barrier" and would rather sing freely.
As for not being a judge on music shows, he once humbly stated that, although he is a singer, he has never received systematic musical training, and thinks he may not be professional enough as a "mentor." "I don't participate because my own skills are not enough, I don't really understand."
