The US Senate passed a bill on the 28th aimed at overturning President Trump's tariff measures against Brazil.
The bill passed with 52 votes in favor and 48 against, with 5 Republican senators voting in support.
The bill will terminate the national emergency status currently used by the Trump administration to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.
The bill still requires a vote in the House of Representatives, but most outsiders believe it will ultimately be shelved. House Republicans have repeatedly voted to block legislation to overturn the tariffs.
Democratic senators criticized Trump for implementing tariffs based on a false state of emergency, saying it has harmed US consumers. They vowed to push Congress to vote multiple times to revoke these trade actions, as the price increases of affected goods and raw materials have caused a surge in living costs for Americans.
Some Republican senators warned that this bill could undermine Trump's ability to negotiate new trade agreements with other countries.
