Malaysia urges nuclear weapon states to immediately sign and ratify the Protocol of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), emphasizing that this is an important pillar for regional peace, mutual trust, and long-term security.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Fadillah said that establishing a strong and enforceable nuclear weapon-free zone is crucial for maintaining regional stability and securing the future.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM) today, he said: “Malaysia reaffirms its commitment to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty. We urge nuclear weapon states to immediately sign and ratify the Protocol.”

Regarding nuclear energy, Fadillah stated that the government is conducting a structural assessment to examine the role of nuclear energy as a potential option for clean, stable, and competitive electricity in Malaysia’s future energy mix.

This assessment is aligned with the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) and aims to achieve energy diversification, enhance long-term energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and lower dependence on fossil fuels.

The Malaysia Power Corporation’s Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organization (NEPIO) has been tasked to coordinate preparatory work in accordance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines.

In addition, Fadillah announced that the Malaysian Atomic Energy Agency will launch the Gamma Spectrum Water Monitoring System (GSWMS) through the 12th Malaysia Plan. This technology aims to enhance Malaysia’s capability to detect and rapidly respond to any radiological threats in water sources.

He also emphasized that the deployment of nuclear energy and advanced technologies must be supported by a strong regulatory framework, strict safety protocols, and transparent international cooperation.

“Our cooperation under the ASEAN Atomic Energy framework is not merely technical; it carries profound strategic significance. It reflects our shared responsibility to ensure atomic energy serves sustainable development, strengthens regional stability, and safeguards the well-being of future generations.”

The two-day meeting brings together regulators from ASEAN member states, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and dialogue partners to jointly discuss regional nuclear safety, security, and safeguards.
