(Bandar Seri Begawan, 5th) In conjunction with International Fishermen’s Day on June 29 and Brunei Ocean Week 2025, the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism will collaborate with Poni Divers and the Poni Foundation to organize a grand “Fishermen's Day Special Event” on the morning of June 8 (Tuesday), from 7:15am to 12:00 noon at Jerudong East Beach. The public—particularly registered fishermen—are warmly invited to participate.

On the day of the event, life jackets will be distributed free of charge to eligible fishermen, and the event is open to all fishing and boating enthusiasts. Organizers hope that through this celebration, local fishermen’s contributions to national food security, marine resource management, and the transmission of traditional knowledge will be recognized, while also raising awareness about sustainable ocean development, coastal safety, and the resilience of fishing communities.

The organizers pointed out that fishermen are facing increasingly severe challenges, including climate change, declining catches, and updated regulations. The event aims to provide tangible support to small-scale fishermen through training, equipment, and cooperation.

The event is centered on five core goals: recognizing fishermen’s role in maintaining national food security; providing capacity building and socio-economic support; encouraging legal registration and compliance with fishing gear licensing; strengthening cooperation with government and financial institutions; as well as promoting the application of modern fishing technology to achieve safe and efficient operations.

Highlights include an artificial reef workshop hosted by a reef ball craftsman, introducing new tools for restoring marine habitats and fish stocks. The Department of Fisheries will also present talks on the management of mangrove crab and lobster resources, while the Port Authority will hold a maritime safety briefing to enhance emergency response capabilities.

There will also be mobile counters for fishermen to register fishing gear and apply for licenses, as well as exhibitions and vendor booths displaying a variety of fishing equipment, boat engines, fish finders, and navigation systems. The event is supported by PROPaz, Bank Usahawan, BIBD, and TAIB.

The event will be officiated by the Permanent Secretary (I) of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Yuslere, who will also launch the reef ball workshop. Acting Director of Fisheries Waanidah will deliver the opening speech, while representatives from Poni Group will give welcoming remarks and a keynote presentation on sustainable fisheries development.

The organizers noted that the first 100 eligible, registered fishermen who respond will receive life jackets—those whose fishing gear is registered with the yellow ID card issued by the Department of Fisheries will each receive one life jacket; those who have their fishing vessels registered with the Port Authority will receive two.

This event aims to safeguard fishermen’s livelihoods and the sustainable development of marine ecosystems through practical skills, safety education, and the establishment of partnerships.

The organizers sincerely invite both new and veteran fishermen to join in, working together to help protect the future of Brunei's oceans.
