(U.S., 21st) U.S. President Trump on Saturday (September 20) threatened that if Afghanistan does not return Bagram Air Base to the United States, it will face 'serious consequences.'
Reuters reported that Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social: “If Afghanistan does not return Bagram Air Base to the people who built it—the United States of America—there will be serious consequences.”
On Thursday (18th), Trump said the U.S. side has been seeking to regain control of the military base, which was used by the U.S. military after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. He told reporters that communications were underway with Afghanistan on the matter.
After U.S. forces withdrew in 2021, the base was taken over by the Afghan Taliban.
Afghan officials have expressed opposition to the return of U.S. troops.
