(Hanoi, 19th) At the invitation of Vietnamese President To Lam and his wife, King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan and the Queen have arrived in Hanoi for a state visit to Vietnam from August 18th to 22nd.
On the morning of the 19th, President To Lam held a grand state welcome ceremony for the King and Queen of Bhutan at the Presidential Palace Square. This marks the first state visit by the Bhutanese royal family to Vietnam since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2012, making it highly significant.
Present at the welcome ceremony were Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, Director of the President’s Office Le Khanh Hai, Minister of Ethnic Minority and Religious Affairs Do Ngoc Dung, Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong, as well as several deputy ministers and the Ambassador to Bhutan. The two leaders jointly inspected the Vietnam People’s Army honor guard and mutually introduced the members of their delegations.
The King and Queen of Bhutan’s visit not only demonstrates Bhutan’s emphasis on bilateral friendship and cooperation, but also highlights Vietnam’s role and status on the regional and international stage, reaffirming Vietnam’s independent, multilateral, and diversified foreign policy, contributing to peace and development.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2012, Vietnam and Bhutan have maintained a good relationship. The two sides have exchanged congratulatory messages at high levels, conducted frequent visits, and have developed cooperation in areas such as tourism, culture, and religion. Bhutan is renowned for its “happiness index,” attracting many Vietnamese tourists; at the same time, Bhutanese are also increasingly coming to Vietnam to learn about its national situation, culture, and landscapes.
In the economic and trade sector, although cooperation potential remains to be tapped, some Vietnamese enterprises have already invested in Bhutan, mainly in the furniture and construction industries. The two sides possess vast potential for cooperation in green growth, agriculture, sustainable tourism, and investment.
On multilateral platforms, Vietnam and Bhutan actively coordinate their positions and jointly participate in forums such as the United Nations and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), maintaining consensus on topics like sustainable development, climate change, and South-South cooperation.
After the welcome ceremony, President To Lam and the King of Bhutan led their respective delegations in holding talks to discuss the future direction of bilateral relations, clearly define key areas for cooperation, and promote the bilateral relationship towards deeper and more effective development.
