International director Ang Lee is reportedly about to begin filming his latest feature drama, Gold Mountain, with rumors that actress Zhang Ziyi has been cast in the lead role. This marks the legendary reunion of the pair 25 years after their previous collaboration on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
According to foreign media reports, the epic Gold Mountain directed by Ang Lee is in its final stages of preparation and is expected to officially commence shooting in California, USA next month. Reports indicate that, in addition to Zhang Ziyi being confirmed as the female lead, previously rumored cast member Fala Chen will also remain in the lineup. This means the two rivals for this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actress will face off in the new film in a dramatic acting showdown!
Sources also reveal that Ang Lee’s long-in-development “Bruce Lee biopic” is currently on hold, with his full attention now focused on Gold Mountain. The film is adapted from the bestselling novel How Much of These Hills Is Gold by Chinese-American author C. Pam Zhang, set against the backdrop of the waning American Gold Rush and telling the gritty, emotional story of two Chinese-American orphans struggling for survival in the harsh Western wilderness. It’s reported that Gold Mountain will spare no expense filming on location in California, and has also enlisted “three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer” Emmanuel Lubezki as director of photography, making for an all-star production team that has generated much excitement.
