(Miri, 8th) To strengthen public safety, a high-definition CCTV installation project costing RM50,000 at Miri Merbau Pelita Recreational Park has been officially completed, addressing the increase in nighttime activities at the locale.
This project was implemented under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP), with a total of 4 high-definition CCTV cameras installed.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, stated that following earlier park upgrades and improvements in lighting, there has been a noticeable increase in people going to the recreational park and basketball court, therefore it is necessary to install a CCTV system.
He said the system helps to curb crime, vandalism, and littering, while also strengthening the supervision and management of public facilities.
During his visit to inspect this RTP project on Wednesday (May 6), he pointed out: “Besides preventing crime and damage to public property, this measure also helps raise public awareness about environmental hygiene, thereby reducing littering behavior and maintaining the aesthetic of the community environment.”
Sebastian Ting, who is also the Piasau area councillor, said that these CCTV cameras feature high-definition recording and night vision, and are equipped with date and time display for ease of monitoring and law enforcement purposes.
He added that the authorities are also working on linking this system to the Miri City Council CCTV Monitoring Centre, in order to achieve more effective round-the-clock supervision.
He hopes the recreational park can continue to serve as a center for community leisure activities and foster connections and exchanges among residents.
He emphasized that ongoing maintenance and public cooperation are very important to ensure these facilities remain safe and in good condition.
Currently, the recreational park is equipped with a basketball court, fitness area, and children's playground.
Previously, the park received RM159,000 in 2017, RM80,000 in 2019, and RM150,000 in 2024 in allocations for upgrade works; the latest RM50,000 allocation for 2025 is specifically used for the installation of 4 CCTV units.
