On the 11th, Australian Prime Minister Albanese announced that Australia will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly to be held in September.
Earlier that day, the Sydney Morning Herald cited unnamed sources saying that Albanese might approve this decision after Monday’s routine cabinet meeting.
In recent months, the traditionally close relationship between Australia and Israel has shown signs of strain. Two days ago, Albanese and New Zealand Prime Minister Luxon issued a joint statement, saying that Israel’s control of Gaza City may violate international law, and urging the Israeli government to reconsider a military crackdown on Hamas’ last stronghold in Gaza City.
Last month, France and Canada announced in succession that they would recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th United Nations General Assembly to be held in September. Britain stated that if Israel does not resolve the humanitarian crisis for Palestinians and reach a ceasefire agreement, it will also take similar action.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed on Sunday that taking control of Gaza City was imperative, and would be achieved "in a short time," as it is "the best way to end the war quickly."
